Frequently asked questions
Why convert SRT to ASS?
To style subtitles. SRT is plain text with italic and bold at most; ASS stores fonts, colours, outlines and positions. It is the format of Aegisub and anime fansubs, and the one FFmpeg's ass filter burns into video.
Can I choose the font or colour here?
Not yet. The file gets one Default style (Arial, white, black outline). Change it afterwards in Aegisub or in a text editor, as described above.
What happens to curly braces in the text?
ASS uses { } for override tags, so braces that belong to the text are written as \{ and \}. Players built on libass (VLC, mpv, FFmpeg) show them as normal braces.
Which encoding is the file saved in?
UTF-8 with a byte order mark, which Aegisub, VSFilter and libass read correctly — accents and non-Latin scripts included.
Can I convert ASS back to SRT?
Yes, with the ASS to SRT converter.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Text, subtitle files and videos are processed by your browser on your own computer. Nothing is sent to a server.
Accented or Cyrillic letters look garbled. How do I fix it?
The file uses an old encoding. Pick the right one in the Encoding menu under the input (for example Windows-1251 for Russian, Windows-1250 for Central European, Windows-1252 for Western languages). The output is always saved as UTF-8.
